Costco Bride: Battle of Warehouse Weddings
Sure, Costco AND Wal-mart are known for savings on everyday items like a 36-roll pack of toilet paper and $4 prescriptions. But can you trust a warehouse club or big-box retailer when it comes to your wedding?
Discount retailers have been breaking into the wedding business, offering products at a fraction of the price you’d pay at bridal boutiques or florists. Costco (COST: 49.13, +0.53, +1.09%) is turning into a one-stop shop for brides and grooms, carrying everything from engagement rings to honeymoons in Tahiti. In the last year, Wal-Mart (WMT: 48.94, +0.18, +0.36%) extended its relationship with Martha Stewart to include a wedding collection complete with invitations, albums and other nuptial-related accessories. Sam’s Club (owned by Wal-Mart) now devotes a section of its web site to wedding products, and says it’s expanding its selection. Even supermarket chains like Publix, Acme and Albertson’s are getting into the business, selling wedding cakes.
All of this comes as many engaged couples are scaling back on their big-budget weddings. This year couples are expected to spend an average of $20,400 on their weddings, down 6.5% from 2008, and a 29% drop from 2007’s average of $28,700, according to The Wedding Report, a market research firm.

See what deals you can find at big discounters.
Of course, there are some trade-offs to buying your invites at Wal-Mart or your flowers at Costco. When you go to a printing shop or stationery store, a professional walks you through every step of the invitation process, helping you select paper, ink color, wording and font style. Getting your invitations from Wal-Mart, though, is a solo – and more time-consuming – effort, says Robyn Bruns, owner of Red Letter Event Planning in Chicago. “You need to give yourself a lot of time, and you need patience to do them. I’ve had brides start out doing it themselves and [then later give] up,” she says.
The good news: Most guests won’t be able to tell the difference between invitations from Wal-Mart or specialized ones from a printer. “You don’t have to sacrifice on quality or style because the options are on trend and well-priced,” says Jamie O’Donnell, a wedding planner in Orlando, who buys from discount stores for both her higher-end and more budget-minded customers.
SmartMoney decided to go shopping with some wedding planners to find out which offerings are worth buying at discount stores like Costco and Wal-Mart, and where to find the best deal.
How to Stalker-Proof Yourself Online
Social-networking sites like Facebook are great, but these same sites are the greatest tools that stalkers have ever had to track their victim’s every move. Here’s how to make yourself invisible without putting a crimp in your social life.

Edit Your Friend List
What with the constant Twitter feeds and Facebook status updates, it’s almost as if these sites have put up a sign: Stalkers welcome! The information is all hanging out there: photo albums, your recent vacation, your school or job … But there’s a real distinction between letting old friends from high school browse your party pics and leaving yourself open to any six-degrees-of-separation acquaintance who wants to browse your life. You may have hundreds of friends on a social-networking site, but you should let only a chosen few in on the day-to-day happenings of your life. Luckily most sites have privacy settings — and you should use them.
Go to Facebook.com/privacy to create an exclusive group of people who have access to your profile, pictures, and updates. If you’re a MySpace user, you can make your profile private under "Accounts Settings," but unlike Facebook, you’ll still be sharing info with your entire friend list. For Twitter (hands-down the most public social-networking site), check a box called "Protect My Updates" on your account page. Only your "followers" will be able to read your feed.
And then, don’t leave your settings set in stone. Any time you end a relationship — with a guy, a toxic friend, or even a company — you need to reevaluate your friend and followers lists. "The moment you end a relationship, you have spies in your network, and they are called friends," says Parry Aftab, an Internet privacy and security lawyer. She recommends temporarily defriending mutual friends who might share information about you until the breakup drama has died down.
Don’t Out Yourself
It can become really tempting to post all kinds of "Here I am!" status updates like "Waiting in the looooong line at the Yankee Stadium" or "Going to Jamaica in three days." But when you do that, you’re basically telling people, "Hey, I’m not at home! Come burglarize my place." No matter how excited you are about your hot night on the town or vacation plans, it’s TMI to share on the Internet.
Do Your Research
Sites like Craigslist have become a no-brainer for all kinds of everyday needs — buying, selling, renting — which makes it way too easy to forget that you really don’t know the person on the other end of the e-mail. To be on the safe side, use an e-mail address that doesn’t give away your full name when placing or responding to ads.
Aftab also suggests doing a quick background check before meeting a Craigslister in real life. At the very least, you should enter the person’s e-mail address or any identifying information from the ad into a search engine like Google or Yahoo and see what pops up. You can also check for references by asking if it’s OK to give him or her a call at the office. If the person checks out, meet in a public place. Have one friend accompany you and let another know when and where you’ll be going.
Google Yourself Every Day
Yeah, sounds like a real ego trip, but a mega-popular search engine can help you find out when you’ve got a serious stalker on your trail. Set up a Google Alert that will notify you anytime your name or phone number is mentioned in a blog post or comment. Go to Google.com/alerts and enter your name and/or phone number as a search term. One caveat: If you have an all-American (i.e., common) name like Kate Smith or Kate Hudson, Google won’t be able to tell you apart from your virtual doppelganger, so you’ll get a lot of false alarms.
Feel Free to Disconnect
It’s pretty damn amazing what a smartphone can do, especially those enabled with GPS navigation. But just because you can let all your friends know where you are on iPhone applications like Foursquare or Yelp, that doesn’t mean you should. Aftab has a simple rule of thumb: "Unless you are looking to connect with people right then, turn it off."
